This past Saturday I went to New York City to see a They Might Be Giants concert. First one for me in a couple of years. They were as funny and good as ever. Can you belive those guys are in their 40's? Couple of fun loving folks!

While in NYC I visited the Musuem of Modern Art. I will say, as an artist, there's really a lot of weird crap in there. I'm I'm using crap in the literal sense. Some of the stuff in there was either way over the top or just plain ugly. My philosophy on art is if it's pleasing to look at, then it's good. You don't really have to understand what the piece is about to appreciate it but detail helps. But if the initial reaction is put off by a displeasing array for squares then would you even bother to further look into an artwork? I sure as heck wouldn't.

I tried explaining modern art to my friend who was with me. He's what I'd liek to call an actualist. He sees things for what they are. It's not wrong to be that way but it leaves some tells about his personality. TO me, it's a very close-minded approach to art. Oh look it's a but of lines and squares. Well, yeah I see that too but I see the interaction between the positive and negative spaces and the playfulness of color and the sheer size of a piece of modern art. Hell, I don't "get" half of the paintings and scupltures of modern art that I do like!

I understand Mondrian's, Pollock's, Gottlieb's, Klee's, Picasso's, etc. works but that doesn't mean I like them. I just know what they're about but I wouldn't go praising an artist's work just because I know what a bunch of swirls on a large canvas means.

It truly was inspiring to be at the MOMA. It brings new meaning to the phrase, "Artists: because we can and you can't." THere's a reason why moern artists are in a musuem and possibly "rich". They thought of the idea first or presented themselves better. I like how people bitch and moan like "my child can do that" or "man they let anything in these museums."

Well, mister/misses, let's see YOU do it, huh? Do you really think it's a waste of time? What about musicians? Are they wasting their time entertaining you? Or news reporters, are they wasting your time telling what happened in the world about things you probably don't care about or even will react to?

I had a headache after leaving the MOMA yet it was like a hangover and I felt a withdrawl like symptom. I want to go back. I only had an hour in there. I felt like I needed a whole day.
